Horton Media has distilled some of its observations about newspaper reproduction quality in a booklet – The Guide to Good Printing which can be downloaded here. Copies of this booklet, which includes our preferred colour swatches, can be obtained through your sales representative.
Here is our order form for jobs (NZ).
Our preflight software is able to solve or identify problems before they are a printed problem. We have come up with two approaches to minimise any publication problems:
1. We can preflight your advertisements. When you receive a supplied ad - check if it is made for our printing process. If not, can you correct it? How is it going to look when the transparencies are flattened? Our ad preflight and repair folders can help you manage these problems.
2. We can set a preflight folder set within your ftp folder - The document you download here describes the standard set of folders that we have running successfully for most customers. If you feel you require a different configuration please call us.

Do you want to improve your images? Nothing beats having the correct settings and sequence of manipulation within Photoshop but this plug-in has dramatically improved several publications' images. If your operators are failing to make corrections that work this is the tool for you. It is particularly good if used within a Photoshop action. If you want to download the one-month trial version and you are a customer of Horton Media we will supply a suitable action to maximize its usefulness.
Here is another interesting-looking product by onOne: Genuine Fractals 6 Professional Edition
This might be the answer for publishers who always receive low resolution images. Here is some sales material from their web site:
"Genuine Fractals 6 Professional Edition is renowned across the photographic and printing industries for its ability to increase image size over 1,000% without the loss of sharpness or detail that you would normally expect. It’s patented, fractal based interpolation algorithms work like nothing else and the results speak for themselves. An easy-to-use plug-in for Adobe Photoshop."
